“Ah, well, you know me. Gotta keep ya guessing.” - Laverne, In My Restless Dreams (Chapter 9)
Lieutenant Laverne is a minor character in In My Restless Dreams. They are a seaplane pilot, and Hazel's spouse.
Appearance[]
Laverne is a common loon with black feathers and white dotted accents. Their eyes are small and bright red. She wears a pilots helmet and goggles, as well and a light brown vest embroidered with a bird-like logo. They carry a polished wooden cane.
Personality[]
Laverne is more subdued than her wife, but has a natural inexplicable charm that peopple find more welcoming than Hazel's boldness. They view flying as a hobby more than anything, somethng she does out of necessity and just happens to enjoy. They are reserved, only really unmasking fully around Hazel. Laverne isn't as attached to Bucky and Walter as Hazel is, but is still friendly with them and was worried when informed about Walter's boat accident[1].
Laverne, unlike Hazel, has a healthier relationship with their disability. They use a cane--- based on the fact that common loons can swim and fly, but have very limited movement on land. They often crack jokes about their condition, playfully calling themself an old lady. She was born with the disability, and she knows her limits on what her body can do. She often subtly imply to Hazel that she should take better care of herself.
History[]
Not much is known about Laverne's past, other than that she met Hazel in her late 20s while she was docked and getting her plane repaired. They agreed to not let themselves be tied down, getting married at a courthouse and traveling almost constantly.
When Hazel dies, Laverne delivers the news to Bucky and Walter, as well as leaving them the Triton and gifting Bucky Hazel's scarf. She becomes closer with the others after Hazel passes, admitting she doesn't have much direction without her. Before the events of Shipwrecked 64, they would visit each other often. As of the beginning of In My Restless Dreams, Laverne is still alive, but sometime after she dies when her plane engine fails and causes her to crash.
